Chamber Names New President

After a six-month search to fill the role of president previously held by Jim Frank Henderson, the board of directors appointed Theresa Lamson, CEO of the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce in Laconia, New Hampshire to fill the role. Lamson is scheduled to begin August 4. The Ewart Group of Spartanburg, SC served as consultant to the search process.

Lamson oversaw tremendous growth as the President of the 650 member Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce over the past six years, including development and implementation of a multi-year strategic financial plan eliminating $65,000 of debt. She also oversaw the administration and accountability of an operational budget in excess of $330,000.

Lamson merged two community chambers of commerce and now operates offices in Laconia and Franklin, New Hampshire. Additionally, Lamson completed a successful three-year capital campaign for the chamber involving the rehabilitation of a local historical building. Over $200,000 of in-kind contributions in labor, materials and expertise was generated and an additional $150,000 in cash. A seasoned chamber executive, Lamson served three years as Business Services Manager for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce in Ohio. She served as President of the New Hampshire Association of Chamber Executives from 2005-2007, and is currently Secretary of the New England Association of Chamber Executives.

Lamson has been active in each of her communities. She recently served as the Finance Chairman for the Town of Weare, volunteers for the Library and Animal Guardians and currently serves on the Advisory Board of New Hampshire Community College.

Chairman of the Board Harry Yeatman said the search process proved to be invaluable. “It allowed us to look at some of the top talent from throughout the country. We are extremely pleased that Theresa will become a part of the community.”

Search Committee Chairman Allen McLaurin further remarked, “Theresa Lamson will bring much talent and tremendous enthusiasm to our organization. We look forward to working with her in the months and years to come.”

Lamson was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland and raised in Worms, Germany and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. She received her bachelor of arts degree in political science and history from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She is married to Jim Lamson and has a stepson, Zachary.

“Jim and I are excited about becoming a part of the community,” expressed Lamson. “We have been so impressed with everyone that we have met during the interview process. It is clear to us that Laurinburg and Scotland County will be a great place to call home.”

Lamson will take the reigns as the new president for the chamber.

New Teacher Breakfast Lined Up

New teachers to the Scotland County School System will have their stomachs full and their desks stocked on August 14.  The Education Committee is hosting the annual New Teacher Breakfast on Thursday, August 14.  The breakfast is made possible by a generous donation from Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation.

And the committee needs your help!  To welcome our educators, members are asked to donate items with their business’s name or logo.  Pens, magnets, calendars, pencils, key chains note pads and other inexpensive items make great gifts.  The committee is also looking for several door prizes for a drawing after the breakfast.

Aside from showing their support for teachers, donating businesses will gain valuable exposure to new customers, have their names listed in the program and newsletter and can have a representative greet teachers at the breakfast.

For goody bag donations, please have at least 75 similar items ready by Monday, August 11.  Door prizes can be donated by Wednesday, August 13.  Call the chamber for more details or e-mail mkendall@laurinburgchamber.com.

Teachers lined the breakfast buffet at last year’s New Teacher Breakfast.  Over 75 teachers attended.

Political Discussions Coming In September, October

Members will have two opportunities to learn about local and national politics and legislation with upcoming political forums.

The annual Washington Perspective meeting will be in Washington, D. C. on Monday, September 15 and Tuesday, September 16.  Also called the Chamber Fly-in, attendees will spend the two days meeting with N. C. Reps. G. K. Butterfield, Bob Etheridge, Virginia Foxx, Robin Hayes, Walter Jones, Mike McIntyre, Heath Shuler and Melvin Watt.  Representatives will meet for a question and answer session at 4:00 p.m. on September 15 followed by a reception.  The following day will open with a breakfast and seminar at 8:00 a.m.

The Chamber Candidates’ Forum will give the public another chance to hear what local candidates’ views and positions are before the November elections.  At 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14 in the main courtroom of the Scotland County Courthouse, candidates will have the opportunity to field questions from the audience.

After feedback from the last Chamber Candidates’ Forum, the fall forum will help citizens make their decisions before early voting begins, which starts on October 16.  The format has yet to be determined, but citizens can expect to get all the information they need to make an informed decision.

More information will be available as the dates draw closer.  For questions, call the chamber or send an e-mail to mkendall@laurinburgchamber.com.

Community Image Committee
Looking For Winning Yards

The Community Image Committee is accepting nominations for the fall Highlander Awards.  The awards, which go out in the spring and fall, recognize outstanding, well-kept lawns and yards throughout Scotland County.  Winners will be recognized at the chamber, receive a lawn sign to display and receive a $10 chamber gift certificate.

Nominations must be submitted by Friday, August 15, and awards will be given out at the September meeting.  To nominate a yard, call the chamber at 276-7420 or e-mail mkendall@laurinburgchamber.com.

News From

Locklear Earns Certification

Ann Locklear, director of human resources, recently earned certification as a senior professional in human resources from the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).  This certification tests theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management.

"Certification as a human resource professional clearly demonstrates a commitment to personal excellence and to the human resource profession," said Susan Meisinger, SPHR president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  HRCI awards two levels of certification:  professional in human resources and senior professional in human resources.

Locklear joined Scotland Memorial Hospital’s human resources department 29 years ago.  Greg Wood, Scotland Health Care System president and chief executive officer, commented, “Most of us know how passionate and talented Ann is regarding our people and ensuring we have a committed workforce.  She is also equally gifted in the technical and leadership arenas, something I have known for many years. I am delighted to have someone of her talents on our team.”

“I am honored to work for an organization that supports professional development of its staff,” Locklear added.  As the HR profession continues to evolve and HR professionals are taking on broader and more strategic responsibilities, demonstrating this level of competence is key to professional growth.”

Acting as the credentialing body for human resource professionals, HRCI is affiliated with SHRM, which is the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession.

Dewyea Joins Staff

Victor Dewyea, MD, board certified in internal medicine and allergy and immunology, has joined the hospitalist program.  Dewyea comes to the medical staff from Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he practiced for over 2 years at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

Dr. Dewyea earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and upon completion of an internship and residency in internal medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., spent several years providing medical care at Ft. Bragg’s Womack Army Medical Center as well as several North Carolina hospitals.  Dewyea has a twelve-year military career and held the rank of Major in the United States Army.  He served for several months as Battalion Surgeon with the 782nd MSB in Iraq.

Dewyea sees the hospitalist specialty growing nationwide and states more physicians are needed as Scotland Memorial Hospital’s hospitalist program continues to grow.  “When additional physicians are added, the hospital will then have 24 hour, seven days a week hospitalist coverage.  We are trained in acute care and we are in the hospital if a patient needs us.”

St. Andrews To Hold Community Fair

St. Andrews Presbyterian College will hold their annual Community Fair Thursday, August 14 from noon to 3:00 p.m.  The fair coincides with their fall orientation, which is expected to draw over 150 new students and their families from across the country.  Local businesses, churches and non-profits will be on-site to welcome them, and show what Scotland County has to offer.

The fair will be inside the Belk Building in the main room and college chapel.  Tables and chairs will be available for setup.  Set up and unloading will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon to avoid traffic delays with incoming students.  Participating representatives are encouraged to bring promotional items and informational materials to encourage students and their families to shop, eat, worship or volunteer locally.

Coordinator with the Office of Institutional Advancement Meredith Bounds said in a press release, “We hope to introduce these new families to our Scotland County community and show them all of the opportunities in Laurinburg.”

For more information, call Bounds at 277-5662, or send an e-mail to boundsmt@sapc.edu.  The registration deadline is August 12.

Quote of the month . . .

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.

U.S. Chamber's Position Status

Small Business Health Plans

S. 2818

Small Business Health Plans Act of 2008

S. 2818 would enable small businesses to pool together to negotiate and purchase health insurance benefits.

The Chamber strongly supports the creation of small business health plans because they allow small businesses to leverage the same purchasing power as their larger competitors and to buy coverage that is free from state benefit mandates

Committee Vote Referred to
Committee
April 3, 2008.

Climate Change

S. 3036

Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008

Rather than promote greenhouse gas-reducing technologies such as clean coal or nuclear energy, this bill addresses global warming by requiring American companies to reduce emissions to 15% below 2005 levels by 2020 and 70% below those levels by 2050

The Chamber opposed S. 2191 because it did not address the international nature of global climate change, promote accelerated technology development, preserve American jobs and the economy, reduce barriers to development of climate-friendly energy sources, or promote energy efficiency measures

Failed Senate cloture vote June 6, 2008.

Small Business Capital

 H.R. 5906

Small Business Capital Expansion And Improvement Act of 2008

This bill would permit small businesses with less than $5 million in annual gross receipts to expense up to $125,000 of qualified real property

The Chamber supports legislation that allows businesses to quickly recoup the costs of their investments because doing so increases cash flows, provides more capital to hire employees, and stimulates investment activity.

Referred to committee April 3, 2008
